Who started them?
Lars Ulrich (Drummer for the band) posted a newspaper article about getting together to form a band. James Hetfeild (singer) joined the band soon after reading the article. *Fun Fact* Did you know Lars wanted to be a Tennis Player before this whole Metallica thing?
Who were the original members?
Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammet, Cliff Burton.
Cliff Burton, during a tour for their anticipated Master of Puppets album (Featuring his creation, Orion) in 1985, black ice caused his bus to tip over, resulting in the end of the amazing bassist’s life. Cliff Burton is still missed today. Orion was played at his funeral. He was replaced by Jason Newstead shortly, and then by Robert Trujillo on February 24th, 2003.
